Maynooth University is an internationally recognised institution located 25 kilometres outside of Dublin, Ireland, and is the nation’s fastest growing university.

One of four constituent universities of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth University in 2018 placed in the global top 100 universities under 50 years old in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

On 16 June 2017, Maynooth University celebrated its 20th birthday, having been formally established as an autonomous university in 1997. Yet, it traces its origins to the foundation of the Royal College of St. Patrick in 1795, drawing inspiration from a heritage that includes over 200 years of education and scholarship.

Today, Maynooth University is a place of lively contrasts–a modern institution, dynamic, rapidly-growing, research-led and engaged, yet grounded in historic academic strengths and scholarly traditions.

Maynooth University  is recognised as one of the leading new universities in the world, ranked #74 in the new Times Higher Education (THE) 100 Under 50 rankings.

The Department of English has been ranked as one of the top 250 in the world in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Maynooth University has been placed in the top 200 universities in the world as ranked by the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which capture universities’ impact on society based on their success in delivering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Maynooth’ success included a ranking of 1st place in Ireland and 49th in the world for Quality Education.

The University was also placed in the top 3% universities globally (at number 13 out of 458 universities) for its research on social inequalities, policies on discrimination and commitment to recruiting staff and students from under-represented groups.  Recognizing the university’s commitment to progressing gender equality, Maynooth University was placed 2nd in Ireland and 34th globally for Gender Equality.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals address global changes including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.  Over 760 institutions from 85 countries participated globally. This was the first time that Maynooth University participated in the rankings.

  • Quality Education MU ranked 49th out of 676 HEIs (overall score of 74.8%), 1st in Ireland
  • Reduced Inequalities MU ranked =13th out of 458 HEIs (overall score of 79.7%), 2nd in Ireland
  • Gender Equality MU ranked 34th out of 547 HEIs (overall score of 71.3%), 2nd in Ireland
