The Ohio State University, commonly Ohio State or OSU, is a public land-grant research university in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 as the state's land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.

The college originally focused on various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but it developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of then-Governor (later, U.S. president) Rutherford B. Hayes, and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to "the Ohio State University".The main campus in Columbus, Ohio, has since grown into the third-largest university campus in the United States. The university also operates regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

Why?

Why Ohio State

Academic Excellence

Ohio State is one of the world's best comprehensive, public research universities.

With over 90 doctoral and 110 master's programs, and countless opportunities for multidisciplinary work, you will be able to explore just about any research question or creative activity.

Big university, big opportunities

Our students have access to more than 200 majors, nearly 500 academic specializations, over 1,000 student organizations, study abroad programs around the world, and internship and research opportunities in almost every major.

Highly ranked

Ohio State is a top 20 U.S. public university (U.S. News & World Report) and a top 10 public research university (National Science Foundation). Many of our academic programs are ranked among the nation’s best.

Large international community

Ohio State is an international university. This year there are over 6,000 international students on campus from more than 100 countries. And the population is much higher when you add international faculty and staff. Join a student organization to connect with other students from your home country or to learn about students from around the world: about 10 percent of Ohio State’s student organizations are dedicated to international students.

Learning beyond the classroom

Ohio State undergraduates can take advantage of a wide range of practical experiences outside of the classroom, including internships, study abroad programs (more than 200 in over 50 countries) and research opportunities.

Research opportunities

The Undergraduate Research Office helps students pursue research opportunities at The Ohio State University. Every year, thousands of undergraduate students conduct research independently, as part of a team or in collaboration with faculty. The Undergraduate Research Office also helps students obtain funding for research.

Extra support during your first year

Since we’re a big university, we pay a lot of attention to helping students make a successful transition to college. Our First Year Experience (FYE) program, voted one of the nation’s best, provides a friendly welcome to students new to Ohio State. FYE programs and events help students connect with each other and take advantage of all Ohio State offers.

Unique housing experiences

Many students find campus living more rewarding when they can live with other students who share their academic or lifestyle interests. Learning communities are residential educational experiences that feature substantial faculty and staff interaction, community service activities, and academic, social and cultural programming.

School history and traditions

Ohio State has a long history, unique traditions and an intensely devoted Buckeye community. Whether you’re studying with friends on the Oval, cheering for the marching band in Ohio Stadium or singing the school songs, you’ll find that Buckeye spirit is contagious!

Urban campus location: Columbus, Ohio
