The University of Hull has been changing the way people think for 90 years. Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’, and over the years, we’ve shared that light with thousands of people from across the world.
As England’s 14th-oldest university, we have a proud heritage of academic excellence, and a history of creating and inspiring life-changing research. And we have no plans to stop helping to build a better world.
The University of Hull was founded in 1927 – originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI, of The King's Speech fame) and we opened for business with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. We’ve come a long way since then. The University now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 academic staff.
Our Royal Charter says our mission is to “…advance education, scholarship, knowledge and understanding by teaching and research, for the benefit of individuals and society at large”.
We interpret our mission in a modern context with a renewed focus on excellence in learning, teaching, research and enterprise, a transformative student experience and being an internationally-engaged anchor institution for our surrounding regions.
Our vision is for the University of Hull to be recognised for academic excellence that empowers people to shape the future.
Our ambitions are bold and challenging – we’ll pursue our vision with a determination to exceed expectations, to contribute ever greater outcomes towards shaping a better world, and to encourage our students to strive for excellence.
We’re committed to providing our students with top-class facilities and an ideal environment in which to live and learn, which is why we’re undergoing a £200-million project to dramatically improve our buildings and facilities.
Our new luxury student accommodation, The Courtyard, is now open, with an even bigger, £130-million accommodation complex coming on our west campus soon. Our £28-million health campus, spearheaded by the state-of-the-art Allam Medical Building, opened last September. And we’ve also spent £9.5 million on turning Middleton Hall into one of the region’s best performance venues and cinemas.
Whichever university you consider, it’s important to know the facts before you make your choice.
University is a place to feed the heart and the head. Somewhere to develop yourself personally, socially, academically. It’s where you find friends for life. Where you say yes to every opportunity and do things you’d never dreamed of. It’s your key to a brilliant future. Here at Hull, you get it all in equal measure.
