Architecture has been taught in Toulouse since 1751, first by the Royal Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, the only provincial art academy to benefit from royal patronage, until its dissolution on August 8, 1793, by convention decree, then by the School of Fine Arts and Industrial Sciences in 1827, and then by the National and Special School of Fine Arts in 1883. It was characterized by its creation by its evolving educational program, which aims to be as complete as possible, inspired by existing educational proposals, but also by real innovations ...
At the end of the 1960s, the Pedagogical Architecture Units were created: the architecture section of the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse, transferred in 1970 to the Mirail district then became the Pedagogical Architecture Unit of Toulouse.
A first research department was created there at the beginning of the 1980s. A scientific council was set up in 1988. The ENSA Toulouse research department became the host team for the TESC doctoral school (Time, Spaces, Companies, Cultures) in 2007 and, in 2008, was transformed into the Laboratory for Research in Architecture (LRA).
In 2011 ENSA Toulouse became an associate establishment of the TESC doctoral school "Temps, Espaces, Sociétés, Cultures" (TESC). It thus officially co-delivers with the Toulouse Jean Jaurès University the doctorate in architecture. In 2015, the Architecture Research Laboratory became the host team of the doctoral school "Mechanics, Energetics, Civil Engineering and Processes" (MEGeP).
The Architecture Research Laboratory of the National School of Architecture of Toulouse is the first laboratory of an architecture school to be labeled "Host team" by the Ministry of National Education, Education Higher and Research in 2016.
Among the 20 national higher schools of architecture under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, the National School of Architecture Toulouse stands out in particular for the precedence of its research and its link with engineering. It also offers a dual architect/engineer path and preparation for the State Urban Architect competition.
The ENSA Toulouse is developing numerous collaborations with local authorities and actors around architectural and urban issues.
The interventions led by teacher-researchers and carried out in the form of project workshops integrated into the pedagogy take the form of advice to elected officials (Toulouse-Métropole, Albi and Carmeaux, Graulhet, Castelsarrasin ...), partnerships with institutions cultural events (Musée des Abattoirs, DRAC, Printemps de Septembre, La Cuisine Nègrepelisse, Goethe-Toulouse Institute, St-Cirq Lapopie town hall, etc.).
