Situated in the heart of Southern Europe, the University of Rijeka’s Department of Biotechnology opened in 2008 as part of a brand new modern campus. Courtesy of funding from the European Union, the department boasts start of the art equipment, including world class microscopy and mass spectroscopy facilities, as well as a modern teaching and research environments. There is even a supercomputer onsite. The faulty staff consist principally of young, internationally trained scientists who are active in their fields of research.

Located in the Croatian city of Rijeka, the new campus overlooks the beautiful Kvarner Bay, and has newly built student accommodation, cafes and a restaurant on site. It lies next to the historic old district of Trsat, with the city centre and modern shopping facilities also easily accessible. Further afield, both Italy and Slovenia can be reached within two hours by bus, with Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovina not much further away.

Students in the department are taught at the undergraduate, graduate (Masters) and doctoral level, using the European Bologna system. In the academic year 2020/2021, the new international Masters program “Biotechnology for the Life Sciences” will begin. An exciting research-focussed program, taught entirely in the English language, this will be aimed at ambitious graduates looking to develop a career in life science research. For students entering in the first year of the program, all tuition fees will be paid on their behalf, courtesy of the European Union’s Structural Funds.
