Located in beautiful Vancouver, B.C, Canada, Langara College started in 1965 as part of Vancouver Community College and in 1970, it opened its West 49th Avenue campus. On April 1, 1994, Langara College was established as an independent public college under the Provincial College and Institute Act. The College is also known as sn?w?ey?? lel?m?, house of teachings, a name given to us by the Musqueam First Nation, on whose unceded traditional territory we are located.
Today, Langara is one of BC's leading post-secondary institutions providing University Studies, Career Studies, and Continuing Studies programs and courses to more than 19,000 students annually.
In 1970, we opened our 49 th Avenue campus and invited the community to make us their first choice for accessible, quality education.
Five decades later, Langara College is recognized as a leading undergraduate institution with a reputation for providing exceptional learning opportunities. Through the collective contributions of our outstanding faculty and staff, our programs and services continue to grow and innovate to meet the changing needs of our community.
By supporting our students' success, Langara has a measurable positive impact on our community. According to an economic impact study conducted for the College by EMSI in the spring of 2020, Langara's alumni, students, and operations together generate $966 million in added income to the region. For every $1 spent:
Diploma students gain $1.50 in lifetime earnings
Taxpayers gain $3.10 in added tax revenues and public sector savings
Society gains $8.70 in added provincial revenues and social savings
Langara is proud of the contributions we make to the lives of our students and to our community. We have built a strong friendship with the Musqueam people, on whose unceded traditional territory our College resides, give back through our amazing VOLT student volunteers, the Langara College Foundation, and our annual United Way Campaign, and work towards a more sustainable future.
Langara College courses and programs were first offered in 1965 at King Edward Centre as part of Vancouver City College. The current site at West 49th Avenue has housed the programs since 1970. Langara College was established as an independent public college under the Provincial College and Institute Act on April 1, 1994.
In 2019 Langara celebrated it's 49th anniversary on West 49th avenue, and it's 25th anniversary as an independent public institution with Beyond 49, an innovative alumni engagement, fundraising, and anniversary celebration campaign. The College's proud history is shared on the interactive campaign website.
Langara's vision is to be Canada's pathways college. We offer university, career, and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that help students find personal and academic success.
