Hernando student art show plays to bigger audience this year

SPRING HILL — Students throughout Hernando County shared their "wild" artistic abilities recently in the Hernando County School District’s 20th annual Art Gallery at the Towne Square Mall. The show, with the theme "Wild About Art," was held May 12 and featured 126 works from students from elementary through high school.

The event featured original student art from all grade levels and across all media, who were recognized for their work. More than 20 students received the Superintendent’s Award, chosen by Hernando County Schools Superintendent Lori Romano.

"Each year, the caliber of student art on display simply amazes me," Romano said. "At all levels, these young artists reveal a depth and sophistication to their work that rivals that of professionals."

"This year’s selections were absolutely outstanding," said district spokesperson Karen Jordan. "These were some of the best pieces I have seen since I’ve been here. It was definitely a daunting task (to pick winners) ... The talent in this district is point of pride."

Previously held at the Hernando County Schools headquarters in Brooksville, this year’s event was held at a larger venue offered at the Towne Square Mall in Spring Hill. It is the first time the event was held in partnership with the business community, Jordan said, which allowed the student works to be seen by a broader community.

The partnership also gave way to another award, the Community Award, which went to first- through third-place winners in three categories: elementary, middle school and high school. Winners were determined by votes from visitors at the event.

"We are grateful to Rich Sanvenero for making (the facility) available to families and the community," Jordan said. "It was a wonderful event."
