InnovED 2018 rewards winners for creative and innovative project

Winners of the InnovED (Innovation for the Education Sector) 2018 competition which focused on multiple intelligences and new innovative concepts were rewarded yesterday at an award ceremony held at the Octave Wiéhé Auditorium in Réduit in presence of the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mr Dharmendar Sesungkur and the Executive Director of the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC), Mr Deepak Balgobin.
The competition, launched in February this year, is a joint initiative of the NPCC and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research. The aim is to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation among students in addition to fostering a culture of innovation which is in line with the NPCC’s 2016-2019 Strategic Plan.
Over 400 participants coming from some 70 secondary institutions and the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) centres both in Mauritius and Rodrigues, took part in the contest. There were some 119 students and 48 facilitators who registered on the platform and were involved in different innovative projects.
In his address, Minister Sesungkur lauded the participants for their great skills and innovative ideas. According to him, the skills they have gained through the competition will further nurture their creative and innovative skills, prepare them for the labour market and turn them into productive employers working towards the country’s economic progress.
He further called on parents to encourage their children to develop their creativity as the world will be guided by innovation and the youth should unleash their potential and come forward with innovative ideas. According to him, youth should be given the appropriate platform to unleash their talents. He commended the participants by stating that they stand as inspiration to their peers with InnovED 2018 beingthe right engine to help them achieve greater success in the future.
 For his part, the Executive Director of the NPCC laid strong emphasis on the importance of innovation to trigger higher economic growth while reiterating the NPCC’s commitment to fuel creativity and innovation. He further dwelt on the rapid changing world which necessitates the adoption of the right techniques and innovation to adapt to future job and labour market which he said is bound to change with time.
InnovED 2018 showcased an array of online learning materials on creativity as well as innovation that included puzzles, games, quizzes, lesson plans and self-assessments targeting both students and teachers. Another innovation brought to this edition allowed students to access the learning materials through mobile devices.
