On the 15^th of May, 2018, Honourable Minister of Education Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh and the Director-General, Ms. Audrey Azoulay signed an agreement regarding the designation of the Ghana African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) located at Biriwa (Central Region) as a UNESCO Category 2 Institute.

With the attainment of UNESCO Category 2 Institute status, AIMS-Ghana is expanding its global outreach to attract not only students from Africa and beyond, but also technical and extra-budgetary support from the wider donor community through the UNESCO network.

The signing of this agreement is to catalyze the Institute along with a process which Ghana commenced in August 2012 following the establishment of the AIMS-Next Einstein initiative, which had the objective of coordinating 15 AIMS centers across Africa. As a partnership project, AIMS-Ghana is a post-graduate center of excellence in education and research with the following objectives:

• To promote mathematics and science in Africa
• To recruit and train talented students and teachers
• To build capacity for African initiatives in education, research, and technology.

Having trained over 500 problem solvers since its creation, AIMS-Ghana serves as an important conduit for enhancing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering the Arts and Mathematics) education to boost development in Ghana. Mathematics underpins modern life through ICT, artificial intelligence, data management and processing, finance and planning, all of which the Ghanaian requires for its growth. AIMS-Ghana is the brainchild of the late renowned mathematician, Professor Francis Kofi Ampenyin Allotey, and other like-minded collaborators. His immense contribution towards the establishment and functioning of the Institute was recognized by the Director General of UNESCO during the signing ceremony.
