UniAbuja, NAPRI to collaborate on animal production, capacity building

The University of Abuja and the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Shika Zaria, are to collaborate on joint researches in animal production and veterinary medicine as well as on capacity building for the advancement of academic endeavours of both institutions. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two institutions identified capacity building of University of Abuja staff in specialised areas, the provision of technical services and access to educational facilities as some of the key areas of the cooperation agreement to be pursued. The MoU was signed on behalf of the university by the vice chancellor, Prof M. U. Adikwu, while the Executive Director of NAPRI, Prof C.A.M lakpini signed on behalf of NAPRI at a ceremony held on the main campus of the University of Abuja recently. The MoU also covered NAPRI assisting the university to establish its own artificial animal insemination centre, Shika brown and broiler type chicken testing centre, dairy cross-bred heifer and indigenous breeds of cattle, the establishment of pasture in the university and assistance in laboratory analysis, among other joint research packages. According to the MoU, the two institutions would jointly supervise postgraduate students of animal science and collaborate on staff exchange, short term training, sabbatical leave and visiting, all aimed at boosting animal production and research for overall national agricultural growth. In a related development, the University of Abuja has also signed an MoU with the Dave Omokaro African Institute on Ageing and Development (DOFRIAD), for partnership in researches and community outreach programmes on healthy ageing and development. Prof Adikwu said the agreement was aimed at facilitating a globally relevant Africa-oriented ageing network that would stimulate critical thinking and innovation approach to tackling inherent challenges and opportunities in population ageing and sustainable development.
